lidstrom:

just saying, it’s in the rulebook that it doesn’t matter if the opposition player knocks it into his own net accidentally - if the player on offense plays it with a high stick, and a goal is scored, it does not count.

But rules dont apply to the Sharks

Alright, I’ve done this before and I am a wings fan and wish the goal did not count… however, if you’re going to bring rules into this you should actually look up the rulebook. It’s not hard, it’s actually on the NHL website. So let me save you some trouble.

80.1 High-sticking the Puck – Batting the puck above the normal height of the shoulders with a stick is prohibited. When a puck is struck with a high stick and subsequently comes into the possession and control of a player from the offending team (including the player who made contact with the puck), either directly or deflected off any player or official, there shall be a whistle.

(ii)  a player of the defending side shall bat the puck into his own goal in which case the goal shall be allowed.

After seeing this, now you can see that although it was batted from above the crossbar it was not followed by possession of San Jose. So… no whistle. Also, section (ii) is clearly stated that if the opposing team high sticks the puck, a defending player can indeed end up batting the puck into his own net.

So ladies and gentlemen, lets all calm down and realize that things don’t always go OUR way and that this was legal in every possible way.

Go wings. haha
